BBQ Chicken Burgers
As the days grow longer and warmer, burgers naturally return to the weekend rotation — and these BBQ chicken burgers are always a hit with teens and young adults. They’re juicy, packed with flavor, and ideal for grilling outdoors in spring and summer.
These burgers shine with a homemade BBQ sauce. If you have time, make the sauce to serve with the patties — it elevates the whole sandwich.
I enjoy bread, but when a burger is this flavorful I often skip the bun. Wrapping the patty in crisp lettuce lets the chicken take center stage and keeps the meal light. If you prefer a bun, go for it — both ways are delicious.
If you want to save your carbs for something else, consider pairing the burgers with a generous portion of baked beans or sweet potato fries. For lower-carb meals, serve the burgers with a side of coleslaw.
Clean, Delicious Condiments and Sides:
- Best Homemade BBQ Sauce
- Homemade Mayonnaise
- Homemade Ketchup
- Pickled Red Onion
- Crockpot Baked Beans
- Baked Potato Wedges
- Garlic Herb Sweet Potato Fries
- Healthier Coleslaw
Servings: 4
Ingredients:
- 1-1/2 lbs ground chicken
- 2 tsp sea salt
- 1/2 tsp ground black pepper
- 1/2 tsp garlic powder
- 3 tsp olive oil or avocado oil
For serving:
- homemade BBQ sauce
- fresh lettuce leaves
- tomato, sliced
- red onion, sliced
- pickles
Instructions:
In a large bowl, combine the ground chicken, olive or avocado oil, garlic powder, sea salt, and black pepper. Mix gently until just combined to avoid compacting the meat.

Divide the mixture into four even portions and shape them into patties. Let the patties rest for 5–10 minutes at room temperature — this helps them hold together on the grill.

Preheat your outdoor grill or an indoor grill pan to medium-high. Brush the grill grates or the pan lightly with avocado oil to prevent sticking.
Grill the patties for about 5 minutes per side, or until they develop a nice golden-brown crust and are no longer pink in the center. Cooking times can vary slightly depending on thickness and grill temperature; use an instant-read thermometer if desired (internal temperature for cooked chicken should reach 165°F / 74°C).

To assemble, place each patty on a large lettuce leaf, add a slice of tomato, pickles, and a few rings of red onion. Spoon about a tablespoon of BBQ sauce over each patty, then add another lettuce leaf or two and wrap to serve.

Serve the lettuce-wrapped burgers with your choice of sides — French fries, potato wedges, sweet potato fries, or a crisp coleslaw all pair well.
Enjoy!
