You can make a crab boil right in the Instant Pot. It’s quick, simple, and perfect for gatherings or holidays.

Why Use the Instant Pot
It’s fast. From start to finish this method takes under 15 minutes, including the time for the Instant Pot to come to pressure, making it ideal for last-minute meals or entertaining.
The shells are easier to crack. Pressure steaming softens the shells and firms the meat slightly, so the legs are simpler to open and the meat is tender and easy to extract.
What Type of Crab Legs to Use: The Difference Between Snow Crab and King Crab Legs
I used snow crab for these photos, but you can use king crab as well. Snow crab legs are often sold in clusters by the pound and have a smooth shell, which makes them easier to handle. Their flavor is mild and slightly sweet.
King crab legs are much larger, have a spiky shell, and are usually sold per leg. The meat tends to be delicate and very sweet. King crab is pricier, but cooks the same way in the Instant Pot — you may need to break long legs to fit a 6-quart pot.

How to Buy and Shop
Most crab legs are sold precooked and frozen; sometimes they’re sold thawed after being flash-frozen at sea. If the crab legs are orange or red when purchased, they’ve already been cooked and you are reheating them. Choose fresh-looking, well-frozen legs with no off-odors.
How to Thaw
The best thawing method is an overnight rest in the refrigerator (at least 8 hours). For a quicker option, place the sealed crab in a bowl and run cool water over it until thawed. Once thawed, crab legs will keep in the refrigerator for 1–2 days.

How to Cook Crab Legs in an Instant Pot
Below are the basic steps; full measurements and details are in the recipe card.
- Place the trivet in the bottom of the Instant Pot.
- Add 1 cup of water and stir in Old Bay and/or Cajun seasoning.
- Arrange the crab legs and lemon on the trivet.
- Secure the lid and seal the pot.
- Pressure cook on high for the recommended time, then release the steam.

Cook Time / How Long to Cook
Cook for 1 minute on high pressure. The Instant Pot will take roughly 5 minutes to reach pressure, so the total time from start to finish is about 10–15 minutes depending on model and whether the crab is frozen.
Frozen Crab Legs
You can cook crab legs from frozen using the same 1-minute pressure time; the pot simply takes longer to come to pressure. I typically thaw first to avoid excess liquid in the crab.
How to Reheat
I usually serve freshly cooked crab with warm butter rather than reheating. If you need to reheat, quickly sauté the legs in a skillet with a little butter or oil until heated through. Crack the legs before storing — crab becomes harder to open the longer it sits.
Pair With These Recipes
Serve the crab legs with simple sides like roasted potatoes, pasta salad, coleslaw, or a fresh salad. Warm garlic butter and lemon wedges are classic accompaniments.

Notes
- Snow crab and king crab can both be cooked with the same 1-minute pressure time; king crab may take slightly longer to reach pressure due to size.
- Adjust seasonings to taste. Omit Cajun if you prefer a milder profile.
- If crab lacks flavor or smells off, it may not be fresh—good crab should have a sweet, briny taste.
- To crack a leg, hold it horizontally and press down in the middle or slightly above the bottom; pressure-steamed shells usually split more cleanly.
- Crack legs soon after cooking; the longer they sit, the harder it can be to remove the meat.
