Frozen Watermelon Margaritas are a classic summer treat.

While classic margaritas are always welcome, this frozen watermelon version brings bright, fresh fruit flavor and a slushy texture that’s ideal for barbecues, poolside sipping, or cooling off on a hot evening.

Why You’ll Love This Recipe

  • Just 4 main ingredients
  • Only minutes of active prep (plus a few hours to freeze the watermelon)
  • Simple make-ahead option
  • Refreshing and perfectly summer-ready

Frozen Watermelon Margarita Recipe Ingredients

This recipe keeps things straightforward: four ingredients plus an optional salted rim. Below are the components and a few notes on choices and swaps.

Ingredients for frozen watermelon maragaritas sit in a variety of bowls on a light grey surface.
  • Fresh watermelon – The fruit is the star. Use seedless watermelon or pre-cut cubed watermelon to save time.
  • Fresh lime juice – Freshly squeezed lime juice is essential for bright, authentic margarita flavor.
  • Honey – Honey is a neutral, natural sweetener that blends smoothly without changing the color of the drink.
  • Silver tequila – A good-quality silver (blanco) tequila keeps the drink balanced without overwhelming the watermelon.
  • Coarse sea salt – Optional, for rimming glasses; coarse salt gives the best texture and flavor contrast.

Exact ingredient amounts are listed in the recipe card below.

Recipe Variations and Modifications

Easy ways to adjust this recipe:

  • Mocktail – Omit the tequila for an alcohol-free version that’s just as refreshing.
  • Adjust sweetness – Watermelons vary in sweetness; add honey gradually until it tastes right.
  • Add heat – Mix chili powder or chili-lime seasoning into the salt rim for a spicy kick.

How to Make Watermelon Margaritas

Follow these simple steps to make a smooth, slushy watermelon margarita:

Cubes of fresh watermelon sit on a tray to be frozen on a light grey surface.
Watermelon and lime juice are blended in a beaker on a light grey surface.

Step 1: Freeze 3 cups of cubed watermelon on a sheet pan in a single layer for 2–3 hours until solid. Freezing most of the watermelon keeps the final drink slushy rather than watery.

Step 2: Use a high-powered blender for best texture. Add the remaining 1 cup fresh watermelon and the lime juice to the blender and puree until smooth. Add honey to taste and blend briefly to combine.

Step 3: Add the frozen watermelon to the blender and blend until fully broken down. Add tequila and pulse just until combined. Taste and adjust honey or tequila if needed.

Step 4: For a salted rim, pour coarse sea salt onto a small plate, run a lime wedge around the glass rim, then dip the glass in the salt. Pour the margarita into the prepared glass and enjoy.

Frozen Watermelon Cocktail Tips

Tips for the best frozen watermelon margaritas:

  • Use seedless watermelon to avoid picking seeds out of the mixture.
  • Choose a powerful blender for a smooth, frothy texture. If your blender isn’t strong, strain the puree through a fine mesh to remove pulp.
  • Pick coarse sea salt for the rim—its texture complements the drink better than fine salt.

How to Serve

Rim the glass with salt if desired, pour the margarita, garnish with a lime wedge, and serve immediately.

How to Store

If you have leftovers, store the drink in a sealed jar in the refrigerator and drink within a day or two. Shake before serving to remix separation. Because of the alcohol content, re-freezing is difficult; if you do attempt to refreeze, you may need to blend again with extra liquid to restore texture.

Frequently Asked Questions

What type of watermelon do you use for margaritas?

For the smoothest results and to save time, use a seedless watermelon.

How do you pick a ripe watermelon?

Look for a clear stripe pattern with a deep green and a creamy lighter stripe, a pale yellow “ground spot” where it sat on the ground, and a deep hollow sound when tapped—these indicate ripeness.
