Gluten-Free Oreo Review 2023: Taste, Texture & Verdict

We bought every brand of gluten-free sandwich cookie we could find — including gluten-free Oreos — and conducted a 100% honest, unsponsored taste test. Read which ones are worth your money and which you can skip.

If you miss the classic Oreo, you’re not alone. Gluten-free alternatives can be expensive and disappointing. To save you time and money, we purchased a wide selection of gluten-free sandwich cookies and put them head-to-head in a straightforward review.

Gluten Free Oreos Review

One of the trickiest parts of eating gluten-free — whether due to celiac disease, non-celiac gluten sensitivity, or personal choice — is the cost of trial and error.

Buy the wrong package and you’re out several dollars for a treat you don’t enjoy. Nostalgia for “milk’s favorite cookie” runs deep, so we wanted to know which gluten-free sandwich cookies actually deliver.

After testing every gluten-free sandwich cookie we could find, we can honestly say some are worth buying and others are best avoided.

Taste is subjective, so our opinions may differ from yours — even members of our household disagreed at times. Still, we hope this review helps you make better choices for your taste and budget.

RATING METHOD

A household of six tasters — two adults and four kids — sampled each cookie. Only one taster is strictly gluten-free.

We evaluated each cookie on three factors:

Flavor: Did the cookie resemble a classic Oreo? Was the filling balanced? Any bitterness or odd aftertaste?

Texture: Was the wafer crisp, crumbly, grainy, or pleasantly satisfying?

Appearance: Did it look like an Oreo in color, thickness, and cookie-to-filling ratio?

GLUTEN FREE OREOS REVIEW

Below are the results from our taste test and notes on each brand.

Kinnikinnick KinniToos

img 13933 4

One of the longer-standing gluten-free sandwich cookie brands, but the recipe feels dated.

Certified Gluten Free? Yes — Beyond Celiac. Allergens listed: May contain eggs.

Summary: Thick, crisp wafers with a grainy texture and darker color than a regular Oreo. Flavor and mouthfeel were the biggest drawbacks.

Verdict: Would not recommend.

Simple Mills Nut Butter Stuffed Sandwich Cookies

img 13933 5

We sampled Peanut Butter and Cocoa Cashew Creme varieties. These offer cleaner ingredients but don’t mimic traditional sandwich cookies well.

Certified Gluten Free? Yes — GFCO. Allergens listed: Cashews, coconut.

Summary: Healthier ingredient list and lower sugar, but the flavor leaned bitter and the texture was rigid rather than soft and sandwich-like.

Verdict: Would not recommend as an Oreo substitute.

Cadia Gluten-Free Chocolate Sandwich Cookies

img 13933 6

Not certified gluten-free and produced in a facility that handles wheat — avoid if you need strict gluten avoidance.

Certified Gluten Free? No. Allergens listed: Soy and egg; produced in facility with wheat.

Summary: Appearance and thickness are close to a classic Oreo, and flavor/texture placed this cookie near the top — but cross-contact risk and soy/egg allergens are important downsides.

Verdict: Good option if you don’t require certified gluten-free products and aren’t sensitive to soy or eggs.

Glutino Gluten Free Chocolate Sandwich Cookies

img 13933 7

An oat-free option that may suit those with oat intolerance; certified gluten-free.

Certified Gluten Free? Yes — GFCO. Allergens listed: Soy.

Summary: Best of the oat-free bunch with acceptable flavor and texture, though still a touch grainy compared to oat-containing options.

Verdict: Recommended if you cannot have oats but want a closer Oreo-like bite.

Great Value Gluten Free Chocolate Sandwich Cookies

img 13933 8

Walmart’s store brand offers a budget-friendly option, but it doesn’t match higher-quality gluten-free sandwich cookies.

Certified Gluten Free? Yes — GFCO. Allergens listed: Soy.

Summary: Attractive price and easy availability, but paler color and gritty texture keep it from being a true favorite.

Verdict: Not recommended if you’re after an Oreo-like experience.

Goodie Girl Gluten Free Chocolate Sandwich Cookies

img 13933 9

Goodie Girl delivers a range of nostalgic flavors and holds up well in taste tests, especially with kids.

Certified Gluten Free? Yes — GFCO. Allergens listed: Soy. Uses purity protocol oats.

Summary: Strong flavor, great cookie-to-filling ratio, and many fun varieties. Texture retains a subtle gluten-free grittiness, but overall these were crowd-pleasers.

Verdict: Great for flavor and variety; texture may deter those seeking a perfect Oreo match.

Nabisco Gluten Free Oreos

img 13933 10

The product many have been waiting for: Nabisco’s gluten-free Oreo closely mimics the classic cookie.

Certified Gluten Free? Yes — GFCO. Allergens listed: Soy. Contains oats.

Summary: Best texture and flavor of the group, closely matching a traditional Oreo. Widely available and comes in multiple varieties; labeled “gluten free” on the cookie for easy identification.

Verdict: Our top pick and the closest match to classic Oreos. Recommended for most people seeking an authentic experience.

Catalina Crunch Keto-Friendly Oreos

img 13933 11

These aim at keto eaters, but carry a shared-facility warning. The brand confirms the product is not safe for people with celiac disease due to cross-contact risk.

Certified Gluten Free? No. Allergens/Warnings: Produced in a facility that handles wheat, tree nuts, peanuts, egg, and soy.

Summary: A useful low-carb option with decent flavor, but mint varieties can be harsh and the texture becomes overly chewy with extended chewing. Not safe for those who must avoid cross-contact.

Verdict: An option for low-carb eaters who don’t need certified gluten-free products; not appropriate for celiac disease.

CONCLUSION

someone is holding out a gluten free Oreo cookie above all the other gluten free sandwich cookies.

After testing all the entries, Nabisco’s Gluten-Free Oreos emerged as the clear winner for flavor, texture, and overall likeness to the traditional Oreo. They’re widely available and the closest match for most people.

If you require certified gluten-free products, consider Nabisco, Goodie Girl, Glutino, or other GFCO-certified brands. If you cannot tolerate oats, Glutino is our top pick among oat-free options.

We purchased everything ourselves to keep this review independent and honest. We hope these notes help you skip the costly misses and find a gluten-free sandwich cookie you actually enjoy.
