What makes a dish feel gourmet? Often it’s presentation and a few thoughtful touches—sometimes at very little extra cost. This Gourmet Grilled Cheese is an easy, affordable way to elevate a simple lunch into something special.
I wasn’t always a grilled cheese fan. Growing up I reached for meat-and-cheese sandwiches or the classic peanut butter and jelly. But while I was on bed rest with twins, LittleChefsDad made a grilled cheese on gluten-free bread that tasted like something from a cafe. When he cooks, he goes all out—careful plating and all. I tend to be more of the quick, no-frills type, which maybe says something about my personality. Either way, this sandwich converted me.
The secret is simple: good seasoning and the right cheese. We buy a Tuscan-style garlic seasoning in the large container from Sam’s Club, which works perfectly for this sandwich. When you’re feeding a large family, big spice jars are a pantry staple.

Another game-changer: Havarti cheese. Its creamy, mild flavor melts beautifully and pairs well with American cheese for texture and nostalgia. LittleChef2, our resident cheese enthusiast, likes to add extra grated Parmesan both inside and outside the sandwich for an extra savory crust. The kids especially enjoy this on homemade large-loaf sandwich bread.

This recipe is straightforward but delicious. Here’s how to make it:
Ingredients:
2 slices bread
2 tablespoons butter, melted
1 slice American cheese
1 slice Havarti cheese
Tuscan seasoning (or a garlic-herb blend)
Grated Parmesan
Brush or spread melted butter on the outside of both bread slices. Sprinkle Tuscan seasoning and grated Parmesan on the buttered sides of each slice. If you like extra flavor, add a little Parmesan and a light sprinkle of seasoning to the inside of the bread as well.
Layer the American slice and the Havarti slice between the bread, seasoned sides out. Cook the sandwich on a hot panini press or in a skillet over medium heat until the bread is golden brown and the cheese is melted and gooey. If using a skillet, press the sandwich gently with a spatula and flip once to brown both sides evenly.
Pull the sandwich apart slightly to enjoy that satisfying cheese pull—stretch it out and savor how the cheeses meld together.
On a nostalgic note, every time I say “stretch it out” I think of an old commercial jingle about a Caramello bar. It’s a silly memory, but now I’m craving one.
